Wow!! Talk about a neglected blog! My husband started full time grad school the week our little man was born 14 months ago while working crazy hours and traveling quite a bit. So I'll just blame the neglected blog on him... (Although I take full responsibility!!)

Saturday, November 5 & 12, I'll be doing outdoor mini sessions at our place in Lanexa, VA. Directions will be given once you have signed up. With a fishing dock, a tire swing and a tree house, there should be plenty to choose from for these 20 minute sessions. The leaves have just started to change by us and I'm hoping the colors will cooperate!! In case of inclement weather, we'll reschedule the sessions. Twenty-four (24) Christmas cards will be included in with your session and we'll have 3 designs for you to choose from. CDs will be available to purchase for $400 (or pre-purchase for $350). (This price applies to mini sessions only and the resolution size is 8x10.) You can expect to see about 20-25 images. 2011 Capture Your Babie Contest Rules & FAQs

Even if you have participated before, please read below as some things have changed a little bit!!! I know it's long, but please bear with me :)

* The contest is open January 29-February 14, 2011

* Sessions must be booked and pre-paid online at http://capturethismoment.brownbookit.com.

* Contest is open for newborns to (and including) age 5.

* Judging will be by an independent panel of judges (not me!)

* Judges are asked to pick the "most expressive" babie. It's not the cutest kid contest.

* Sessions are booked in half hour increments with approximately 20 minutes of "on-camera" time. Some kids melt within 5 minutes so I go based on each situation. You can bring a clothing change as long as we can fit it in within 20 minutes. Feel free to arrive a few minutes early to change them into their clothes or if they're shy and need to a bit more time to warm up.

* You'll see 20 images per session.

* There is a flat entry fee of $15 per family which includes a slideshow emailed to you and one 5x7 print from the session.

* Images will be placed online this year for you to choose your contest entry and order additional portraits. There is no obligation to order any additional images. If you choose to do so, you'll have 72 hours after your images are posted to order. If you miss the deadline and they need to be re-uploaded, there will be a $50 re-upload fee.

* All orders must be completed by Wednesday, Feb. 16. Any contest images not selected by this date will be chosen by me, and any images not ordered will be discarded.

*Images ordered will be available for pickup at the reception (details/date/location to be determined in a few weeks). We are gearing for the reception to be in early March. If you need images for birthday gifts or prior to early March, please let me know and I'll do my best to get them out in time.

* All of the contest entries will be posted on Facebook for the public to vote. I will have model releases for everyone to sign. If you would prefer for the images not to be posted on Facebook (names will not be used), they simply won't be posted. The only images posted will be those with a signed written model release.

*Winners will be in 5 categories: newborn - 6 months; 7-18 months; 19-36 months; 37 months to age 5. The fifth category will be the image that gets the most "likes" on Facebook.

* For the first time, we are offering a CD of 8x10 resolution images. All 20 images will be bundled together and available for $250. If you pre-order the CD prior to your session, the price is $200. You can do that at the time you sign up. These images are unretouched, but are color corrected. (They'll look like what's on your slideshow.)

* Special pricing and online ordering applies to the "Capture Your Babie" contest only and NOT regular sessions.

2011 Capture Your Babie Contest... How it all began...

After taking a hiatus last year (due to being sick during my pregnancy with our now 4 month old, Zachary), we are excited to launch our 4th annual Capture Your Babie Contest.

How it all began...

In 2007, having recently moved here from San Diego where I was used to photographing year round outdoors, I was bored out of my mind by the time February came around. I literally woke up one day with the idea of having a "Capture Your Babie" contest and expected 10 kids to come...3 being my own. We lived in a small townhouse and we painted our living/dining room walls crazy colors. I was shocked when 42 kids came to play. The next year, 62 came. And finally, in 2009, 122 kids came. Now, we have a bit more space in our studio. And I'm excited to paint some walls more crazy colors as well as some fun furniture pieces. January is our "get ready" month and we'll be posting some fun shots/video on Facebook of the process. Having 5 kids underfoot, I would describe my phase of life right now as a circus...and I love it! I won't bother with the ages or names...by the time January rolls around, I'm sure you'll be able to see them all on Facebook prep shots. And they'll probably be covered from head to toe with paint. And chances are, in Williamsburg, if you don't know us, you'll know someone who knows someone who knows someone who knows us!

Christmas Card Day at the Studio

On two Saturdays in November, November 6 & 20, we will be having a Christmas Card Day at the Studio with a reduced session fee and special collection pricing. These 20 minute sessions will be at our studio in Toano. The session fee is $50 and collections begin at $150. You will receive 24 complimentary custom Christmas cards with each session.

Chick-fil-A 5K

Congrats to all participants in the Chick-fil-A 5K and Family Fun Run this past Saturday at the Mariner's Museum!! Close to 800 runners ran, with my own kids running with the herd of Chick-fil-A cows. If you missed it, don't worry...you can run the 8K at Christmas Town/Busch Gardens this December.

This Mother's Day, I am extremely grateful for my mom who just had open heart surgery 6 weeks ago. She's doing great and I spent a few weeks in California. I thought I was there to help her recover, but I think the "mom" in her came out and SHE was trying to do my laundry and make my bed and take care of my 2 youngest. Go figure!!

I am also grateful for my little ones and feel honored for the privilege of being called "Mommy", "Mom", "Mama" and now "Ma" by my little man.

Cherry Blossoms and More!

What started out as a journey to see the beloved cherry blossoms in DC turned out to be a full adventurous day, that's for sure! We made it to DC in record time thanks to our race car driver (the g'pa of our cute subject). But deciding against the metro to park closer to the monuments, we ended up taking a wrong turn and ended up in Georgetown. We just happened to pass Georgetown Cupcake Co., the cupcake shoppe I have been dying to go to for a year now. So...we just had to stop! And I had a lemon cherry one. Mmmm... (I love getting lost in fun places!) An hour later, we finally found parking and were on our way to the blossoming cherry trees...with millions of other people. But again took a detour to play amongst the willow trees. We did make it to the cherry trees...eventually.... I'm thinking we need to do a day of shooting in Georgetown. Any takers?!?!

2010 Running of the Chick-fil-A Cows

Do your kids love Chick-fil-A for the beloved Cow or the Playroom? I have to confess that Mr. 2 year old is afraid of "Cow Cow." But at least I'm guaranteed an extra snuggle or two from Little Man when "Cow Cow" comes around!

Join us on May 29, 2010 at the Mariner's Museum in Newport News at 8:00 AM for the 2010 Running of the Cows Event. This 1/2 mile family fun run is designed for families. I would bring my own herd for the run, but with an entire herd of Chick-fil-A cows running with the families, it's an event I just can't pass up photographing. So come meet me and hang out with the herd! Capture This Moment Photografie will be providing an extra something special for families!!

Senior May Moments

For the month of May only, we are waiving senior portrait session fees! All rising seniors who book their portrait session before midnight on May 31st will not have to pay a session fee -- savings of $150! The session must take place by September 1st. The senior portrait session can be in studio or on location, or a combination of both. There's no limit to the number of wardrobe changes, so have fun with it!

We are beginning sign-ups for the 3rd annual Capture Your Babie Contest. The contest is open to children newborn to age 5 and you can sign up online by clicking on this link.

The contest begins Saturday, February 21 and runs through Friday, March 13. This is our first attempt at online scheduling so please bear with us if there are any quirks.

This is also our first year of doing the contest at our studio and if you've participated before, things will be slightly different. There is a small session fee of $10 per child to participate and that entire session fee will go to the Maggie Smith liver transplant fund. I'll post the blog link soon and you can read all about Maggie's incredible journey. She lives in York and has been through quite a bit in her young life!

You will still receive a complimentary 5x7 image for each child who participates. We will not be posting images online to order this year so when you sign up for a session, you will also need to sign up for a portrait preview session with Sara and she'll help you pick your contest entry as well as walk you through the ordering process.

I'm finally feeling like I'm getting caught up! The leaves here in Williamsburg are beginning to turn. When we get back from New York on Sunday, I'm sure there will be more color sprouting around. But the color couldn't have been any more perfect for Miss Q if I had planned it myself. Our session was pretty much done when the kids climbed on a woodpile in Colonial Williamsburg. And this image is the result... And as far as the Fife and Drum Corps, I have William to thank! He was leading the corps down Duke of Gloucester Street. The kids already had their coats on to go home. When I saw them coming, the jackets flew off and we ran down the street, not sure if they were even coming all the way to us. They stopped in front of us and the black and white image below is the result. Thanks William!! (I shot his and Carrie's wedding - dig deep into the blog - in June and some of their images should still be here!) And the last image is one of my favorites from this fall. Completely unplanned (down to that lone leaf!) and of course with Miss Q...completely perfect!!

Did I mention we're going to New York? I'm really excited!! Usually, when we take a trip, it's either to visit family or work related. And this one is no different...a photo conference. I'm actually skipping the conference and just going to the trade show to play. And I have 3 portrait sessions while we're there! But the rest of the time, I'm just going to wander with camera in hand. No agenda. No timeline. Just wandering. I rarely get to do this, so I'm really, really excited! I'm taking notes from everyone I meet on where I should be sure to go...

I know, I know...I'm really far behind! September just kind of disappeared with school starting and me working full time now. I don't know what to call myself anymore. Since I had kids, I've been a work at home mom. But now that I go to the studio to work, the 2 younger ones come with me. So who knows what my title is. A take-your-kids-to-work kind of mom. I don't know...

Anyways, here are some of the little cherubs who paid me a visit last week. And I promise to post some from all of the recent sessions!!

Engagement Gallery Night - November 8, 2008

We exhibited at the Kiln Creek Golf Club's Bridal Fair today and kicked off our first Engagement Gallery. What is an Engagement Gallery, you ask? Well.....it's going to be a lot of fun! From now until November 1, we are offering complimentary engagement sessions to all engaged couples (on location or in studio) and will give each couple one 20 inch print. It could be a 20x20 image or a 8x20 storyboard panel image... No limits on creativity! Is there a catch, you ask? Only two. You should not have already booked your wedding photographer and you must really be engaged.

The sessions usually last about an hour and I recommend going to a location that means something to you or that you just really like. I haven't had a groom say the engagement session was painful yet so I'll try my best to keep that on my record! If you would like to buy additional images or products (Save the Date cards, Christmas cards, guest book, etc.) other than the complimentary engagement image, you can certainly do so, but will be under no obligation at all. I've always liked Saturn cars because of their no-hassle policy. So I guess we're the Saturn photography counterpart.

On Saturday, November 8, from 7:00PM - 9:00 PM, we'll host a reception at our Toano studio (with food of course!) and images from all the couples will be displayed throughout our 2500 square foot studio that used to be an old farmhouse. In fact, it's the oldest surviving house in Toano so it has a lot of character in it. You can take your image home that night. You can use it as a signature board image or display it at your wedding or simply have it at your house. Who knows...maybe you'll give it as a Christmas gift to your parents and have one gift crossed off your list early!

Why are we crazy enough to be doing this? It's simple. Even though my husband and I have been married for 11 years, I remember how overwhelming bridal fairs were. We're giving you a chance to try us out to see if our personalities and photography style match what you're looking for in a wedding photographer before you sign a contract.

We just brought Sara Goggin on board to help with marketing and image presentations in the studio after your photography session. As I photograph families mainly on the weekends when families are together, I am away from my family during that time. And as most people will want to see their images together in the evenings or weekends, I will be away from my family double time. Okay...so the youngest 2 camp out at the studio with us during the day unless I have a session, but I sort of miss our school aged girls and want to spend time with them on the weekends instead of being the Invisible Mum. I know you'll like Sara as you get to meet her!! Please bear with us as we're all in this exciting change together. Sara just recently graduated from William & Mary with a degree in Marketing so hopefully it will be fun for her. We played tag team through Balboa Park in San Diego for Katie and Justin's senior portrait sessions. I've done more seniors this year than I have in the past and have enjoyed the difference between young children and nearly adults. For instance, most toddlers aren't allowed to have "have at it" in a fountain like this! Katie and Justin...watching you guys interact reminded me so much of Mike and myself. It's been a crazy (but mostly good crazy) summer with all of our traveling and opening our studio all with 4 small kids in tow. I'm looking forward to school starting tomorrow and getting into a routine.

Sometimes, life just isn't fair. It feels better to borrow a common phrase in our house even though it's a very childish phrase. It just stinks to have to say goodbye, even though I know it's a part of life. Grandpa, we will miss you. I'm glad you got to know your great-grandkids (and your "Zachary") and that we were able to spend a good two years with you here in Virginia. Thanks for allowing your house to be their playground and not a museum and for enduring all of their Hannah Montana shows. We'll miss cookies and milk tradition before heading home every time we went to see you guys. But most of all, we'll miss all of the talks that those cookies brought. We love you.

Back from San Diego

I got home yesterday morning at 3:30 AM. My flights from San Diego were delayed and fortunately both were delayed. Michael had his first airplane ride and made friends with all the neighbors sitting around us...and promptly fell asleep as we were airborne. I honestly do not think a happier baby exists. And yes...I've paid my dues with 2 colicky kids so I think it's about time a happy one came to visit me!

Thanks to all of you who are patiently waiting for me to edit your images and process your orders. I'm back now and will be working in the next few days to get caught up. We've got some great ideas coming in the fall. And a Christmas party in December. I'm so excited that we finally have a window that can have a candle in it!

First Studio Session

On Wednesday before we even had our grand opening, the Fullers were my first guinea pigs. Here are a few images from their session. I was kind of concerned about not having enough available light at 7pm, but I think I'm liking it! Of course when you have cute kids to work with, it's not hard to get a great shot!

THE INCENTIVE

So...you took a chance and booked a session because I said the incentive was sweet... And now I'm sure you're wondering what the incentive is.

Well, it's an image box filled with 10 5x7 mounted images from your family session. The image will have one of your images wrapped around the box. I fell in love with the box when I discovered it a month ago. If you don't think it's sweet, give it to a grandmother for Christmas and you'll have someone checked off your list. I'm sure she'll eat it all up!

And if you are one of those who are now kicking yourself because you didn't book a session, I have a consolation offer for you. If you send me an e-mail or call by midnight on Sunday, August 10, you can have the image box with your session. But you've got to fill it with prints yourself. Don't get huffy with me...I warned you ahead of time!!

If by some small chance you're reading this and it's still Saturday, you can send me an e-mail by midnight and you can have the entire enchilada.

Thank you to all of you who came to our Grand Opening today! We hope you enjoyed the tour. The highlight of the day had to be Mr. Bert Geddy's visit to our new studio. For those of you weren't able to come to our Grand Opening today for the tour, our studio is located in an old farmhouse. While no one knows the exact date the house was built, it is the oldest surviving house in Toano and was built in the late 1700s or early 1800s. Mr. Geddy grew up in the house and it was neat to find out why the upstairs had a kitchen and what the different rooms were used for. It is because of Mr. Geddy that the house wasn't torn down and because of Mr. David Hertzler that the house was restored. As for us, it is still a work of progress as we still have some painting/wallpapering to do. I've never had a "real" studio before so it will be fun to explore how to capture your moments while in a studio setting. Here are some images from the day.... Enjoy!! And I'll post more later... An old Ford

We were able to see my family in Oklahoma on the way to Lindsey's wedding in Texas and of course I just had to hunt down an old Ford. My dad was a good sport and let the kids dress him up in all kinds of things... Along the way, we saw the Oscar Meyer Weinermobile in Lexington, Kentucky and we also picked up a few things for the studio on our trip. Never mind that we were all squished for the rest of the trip!! My family often complains that they don't get enough pictures of my kids. I take the pictures...I just don't distribute them often enough. So here you go, guys! You should be good to go for the next year or so...

We're excited that in a month and a half, we'll be moving out of our home studio and into our new studio in Toano, Virginia. Toano is about 15 minutes from Williamsburg. Yeah, I missed a few days. It's just been a long week, but it's the weekend and the sky is blue! "Tomorrow is always fresh with no mistakes" as Anne of Green Gables always says...

So...since I missed 3 days, today's "moment" offer will be valid for 3 days (until May 20). As I huddled under the awning in France on Mother's Day at Busch Gardens, I kept seeing a ton of places that would be great spots to photograph. Sooooo...let me know if you see this in time.
